The Hospices de Beaune: an original hospital institution since 1443
The history of the Hospices Civils de Beaune began in 1443, when Nicolas Rolin and Guigone de Salins decided to build the Hôtel-Dieu hospital. Their act of charity and patronage created a tradition that has enabled the Hospices de Beaune to stand the test of time in an exceptional way.
Today, the Hospices Civils de Beaune includes the Beaune hospital center, the Arnay-le-Duc, Seurre and Nuits-St-Georges hospitals, as well as a training institute for nurses and orderlies. The Centre Hospitalier Philippe Le Bon is the support facility for the Groupement Hospitalier de Territoire du Sud Côte-d’Or.
The originality of this institution lies in the importance and nature of its heritage. On the one hand, there’s the Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune, a historic monument that has not welcomed patients or elderly residents since the 1980s. On the other, two prestigious wine estates – Domaine des Hospices de Beaune and Domaine des Hospices de Nuits. These estates cultivate the finest Burgundy appellations, selling their production each year at auction. Thanks to its exceptional heritage, this hospital institution also plays a leading role.
The Cité des Vins
The Cité des Climats et Vins de Bourgogne is a network of three future cultural and tourist sites located in emblematic areas of the Burgundy vineyards: Chablis, Beaune and Mâcon.
Open to all, from neophytes to enthusiasts, the Cité offers a chance to discover the riches of the vineyards through friendly, sensory and educational experiences adapted to all ages.
Each site offers a multi-sensory plunge into the world of wine and vines, revealing the rich cultural diversity of Burgundy wines. Visitors can take part in workshops and tasting courses, while enjoying a varied program throughout the year.
Beaune, first French town to welcome vintage cars
Yves Bergeret, Burgundy delegate of the FFVE, bravely proposed a “label” enabling French towns to welcome vintage vehicles. Thanks to his commitment, Beaune became the first “Ville d’Accueil des Véhicules d’Époque” in France.
The FFVE had already won the right for vintage vehicles to circulate in eleven cities, but Yves went one step further, convincing Jean-Louis Blanc, President of the FFVE, of the value of his project.
At the ceremony, Jean-Louis Blanc pointed out that classic cars account for just 1% of the total car fleet and cover an average of 1,500 kilometers a year, far from the pollution accusations.
The award ceremony was attended by personalities from the FFVE, the Mayor of Beaune, Alain Soguenot, and a selection of vintage vehicles, including an exceptional electric car driven by Patrick Friedli and his son, a jewel by Ettore Bugatti dating from 1931. A demonstration that the Association des Oldtimers de Côte-d’Or is making a remarkable contribution to environmental preservation.
Moutarderie Fallot: an independent Burgundian family business since 1840
Equipped with high-performance equipment, Moutarderie Fallot has been able to preserve the traditional know-how of stone-grinding the seeds, thus preserving all the taste qualities of the paste. A particular commitment to preserving the environment is demonstrated by the sorting and recycling of waste, and the treatment of effluents.
Marc Désarménien, grandson of Edmond Fallot, is currently at the head of the company, where a team of some twenty employees contributes to the quality of production. Over the years, the company has expanded its product range to include aromatic mustards, vinegars, preserves and condiments, all manufactured to rigorous quality standards.
To share its traditional know-how with the general public, La Moutarderie Fallot has inaugurated a Museographic Area offering two tour routes. In addition, two boutique-workshops were opened in Beaune and Dijon, offering a tasting area entirely dedicated to mustard under the slogan ‘Enjoy Fallot!
